3-Day Amsterdam Itinerary for US Travelers: The Perfect Long Weekend
Dave Mak
Amsterdam Travel Expert

Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit to Amsterdam. Long enough to hit the major museums, explore the canals, visit a few coffeeshops, and get a feel for the city. Short enough that you'll leave wanting more.
This itinerary is built for American travelers — it accounts for jet lag, booking timelines, restaurant hours, and the things that catch US visitors off guard.
Before You Go: Key Planning
| Task | When |
|---|---|
| Book flights | 2–4 months ahead |
| Book hotel | 3–4 months ahead (summer), 1–2 months (winter) |
| Book Anne Frank House | As soon as you book flights (sells out 6+ weeks) |
| Book Van Gogh / Rijksmuseum | 1–2 weeks ahead |
| Notify bank of travel | 1 week ahead |
| Pack rain jacket + layers | The night before |
Where to stay: Book a hotel in Centrum or Jordaan for maximum walkability. You have limited time — don't waste it on long tram rides. See our First-Timer's Guide for neighborhood breakdowns.
Day 1: Arrival & Canals
Morning: Arrive & Settle In
9:00 AM — Land at Schiphol Airport. Skip the taxi line. Take the train to Centraal Station (€5.50, 15–20 min). Tap your contactless card at the gate — no ticket needed.
10:00 AM — Drop your bags at your hotel. If your room isn't ready, most hotels hold luggage. Don't nap — power through the jet lag.
10:30 AM — Walk to your first coffee and a stroopwafel. Head to Siberie or any cafe in the Jordaan for a proper introduction to Amsterdam pace.
Late Morning: Canal Walk
11:00 AM — Walk the Jordaan canals. This neighborhood is the most picturesque part of the city — narrow streets, indie boutiques, canal-side cafes. No map needed. Just walk and get lost.
Must-see stops:
- Prinsengracht — the most beautiful canal
- Noordermarkt — organic market on Saturdays, flea market on Mondays
- Winkel 43 — the best appeltaart (Dutch apple pie) in Amsterdam. €4.
Afternoon: Museum Afternoon
1:00 PM — Pick one museum. Trying to do multiple in one afternoon is a mistake. You'll get museum fatigue and remember nothing.
Best choice for first-timers: Rijksmuseum (€22.50, 2–3 hours). The Dutch Golden Age collection is world-class. Rembrandt's Night Watch alone is worth the trip.
Alternative: Van Gogh Museum (€20, 1.5–2 hours) if you prefer art. More focused, less overwhelming.
Both require timed tickets booked in advance. Don't show up without one.
Late Afternoon: Vondelpark
4:00 PM — Walk through Vondelpark, Amsterdam's central park. It's right behind the museums. Grab a drink at the park pavilion and watch locals bike past. Great people-watching.
Evening: First Coffeeshop Visit
6:00 PM — Dinner. Don't eat near Dam Square or the Red Light District — those restaurants are tourist traps. Instead:
- Foodhallen — indoor food market with 20+ vendors. €10–€15, casual, excellent.
- Brouwerij 't IJ — brewery near the windmill. Great beer, bitterballen, local vibe.
8:00 PM — First coffeeshop visit. Start mild:
- Siberie — relaxed living room vibe, chess boards, fair prices
- Paradox — quiet, calm, excellent space cakes
Start with a mild strain like White Widow or Silver Haze. Go slow. You're still jet-lagged, and Dutch weed is stronger than most US flower.
Day 2: The Classics
Morning: Anne Frank House
8:30 AM — You booked this 6 weeks ago, right? If yes, your timed entry slot is worth the early start. The Anne Frank House is one of the most moving historical sites in Europe.
- Duration: 1–1.5 hours
- No photos inside
- No food or drink
- The museum is quiet and respectful — save your loud energy for later
Didn't book ahead? Your only option is checking the website at 10 AM (Dutch time) on the day of — they release a small batch of same-day tickets. No guarantee.
Late Morning: Walk to the Nine Streets
10:30 AM — From Anne Frank House, walk 5 minutes to De Negen Straatjes (The Nine Streets). Amsterdam's best shopping district — vintage shops, Dutch design, cheese shops, and independent bookstores.
Buy: Dutch cheese (aged Gouda), stroopwafels, or nothing at all — just enjoy the architecture.
Lunch: Dutch Classics
12:30 PM — Frites with mayo at Vlaams Friteshuis on Voetboogstraat. €3–€5. The best fries in Amsterdam. Add satay sauce or peanut sauce for maximum effect.
Afternoon: Canal Cruise
2:00 PM — Amsterdam from the water is a completely different experience. Book a 1-hour canal cruise.
- Cost: €15–€25
- Duration: 1 hour
- Best: Evening cruise if you can, but afternoon works
Skip the Heineken Experience. It's a branded drinking session, not Amsterdam. Your time is better spent on the canals.
Late Afternoon: Explore De Pijp
3:30 PM — Take tram 16 or 24 to De Pijp neighborhood. Walk through Albert Cuypmarkt — Europe's largest outdoor market.
- Fresh stroopwafels: €1
- Herring sandwich: €4
- Fruit: €2
- Cheese tasting: free
Evening: Brown Cafe Experience
7:00 PM — Dinner at a Surinaams restaurant. Surinamese food is Amsterdam's best-kept secret — a fusion of Indonesian, Indian, African, and Dutch cuisine. Try roti or bara.
Recommended: Spice & Rice (De Pijp). Budget: €10–€15.
9:00 PM — End the night at a brown cafe (traditional Dutch pub). Cafe 't Smalle on the Prinsengracht. Order a beer, order bitterballen, and do what Amsterdammers do — talk, laugh, and watch the city go by.
Day 3: Choose Your Own Adventure
You have options depending on your energy and interests.
Option A: Day Trip (Best for high energy)
Take the train to Haarlem (15 min, €5 each way). Smaller, quieter, beautiful. See the Grote Markt, visit the Frans Hals Museum, and shop at the outdoor market. Back in Amsterdam by 4 PM.
Or: Zaanse Schans (20 min, €5 each way). Windmills, clog factory, cheese farm. Very touristy but very Dutch.
Option B: Museums Deep Dive (Best for culture)
Visit the one museum you skipped on Day 1. Then add:
- Stedelijk Museum — modern art. €20.
- Moco Museum — Banksy and Warhol. €18.
- NEMO Science Museum — rooftop with amazing views. €17.50.
Option C: Coffeeshop Crawl (Best for cannabis tourists)
Hit the shops you missed:
- Boerejongens — for top-shelf Cali and professional service
- Grey Area — tiny, legendary, strain of the day
- Katsu — local De Pijp favorite, artsy vibe
- Het Gelderse — budget-friendly, popular with locals
Rule: Don't buy from street dealers. They sell fake Cali packs and weak product. All legitimate weed in Amsterdam is sold inside licensed coffeeshops.
Late Afternoon: Final Walk
4:00 PM — One last walk along the canals. Begijnhof — a hidden 14th-century courtyard in the center, free and peaceful. Bloemenmarkt — the floating flower market.
Farewell Dinner
7:00 PM — Splurge on your last night.
- Mid-range: Cafe de Sluyswacht — canalside, classic Dutch, great atmosphere
- Nice: The Pantry — traditional Dutch cuisine in a cozy setting. €25–€35.
Budget for 3 Days
| Category | Budget | Mid-Range |
|---|---|---|
| Flight (US East Coast, RT) | $500 | $700 |

| Food (3 days) | €105 | €165 |
| Attractions | €40 | €70 |

| Coffeeshops | €40 | €80 |
| Total (USD) | ~$1,100 | ~$1,750 |

What to Skip
| Tourist Trap | Why Skip | Instead Do |
|---|---|---|
| Heineken Experience | Overpriced branded bar | Brouwerij 't IJ (real brewery) |
| Dam Square | Crowded, overpriced | Jordaan or De Pijp |
| Red Light District at night | Crowds, pickpockets, chaos | Walk it during daytime once |
| Madame Tussauds | You have this at home | Any real museum |
| Street dealers | Fake products | Licensed coffeeshops only |
Quick Tips for Americans
- Book everything ahead — Anne Frank House, museums, and canal cruises sell out
- Rain jacket daily — don't trust the forecast, just carry it
- Dinner at 7 PM — not 9 PM. Kitchens close by 10.
- AmEx won't work — bring Visa or Mastercard
- Taxi is a trap — train from airport, trams in city
- Walk in the bike lane = danger — that red pavement is for bikes, not you
