Best Amsterdam Museums & Skip-the-Line Tickets for US Travelers
Dave Mak
Amsterdam Travel Expert

Amsterdam has world-class museums, but visiting them requires strategy. Tickets sell out weeks in advance, lines can stretch for hours, and the wrong approach will leave you staring at your phone outside the Rijksmuseum instead of staring at The Night Watch.
This guide covers every major museum — which ones to book ahead, which are walk-in friendly, and exactly how far in advance you need to plan.
The Golden Rule: Book Ahead
Amsterdam's three most popular museums all require timed entry tickets purchased online in advance. You cannot buy tickets at the door. This is not a suggestion — it's how the system works.
| Museum | Book By | Walk-In Possible? | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anne Frank House | 6–8 weeks ahead | Almost never | €16 |
| Van Gogh Museum | 1–2 weeks ahead | No | €20 |
| Rijksmuseum | 1–2 weeks ahead | Rarely | €22.50 |
| Stedelijk Museum | Same week | Usually | €20 |
| NEMO Science Museum | Same week | Often | €17.50 |
| Moco Museum | Same day | Yes | €18 |
| Amsterdam Museum | Same day | Yes | €15 |
| A'DAM Lookout | Same day | Yes | €14.50 |
The Big Three (Book First)
Anne Frank House
Why go: One of the most powerful historical museums in Europe. The actual secret annex where Anne Frank, her family, and four others hid for two years during WWII. Walking through the bookcase entrance is an experience that stays with you.
Booking: Tickets are released 6 weeks in advance on the official website. They sell out within hours for peak dates. Book as soon as you book your flight.
Same-day tickets: A small batch is released at 10 AM Dutch time each day. Conservative estimate: 200 tickets for tens of thousands of requests. Don't rely on this.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Duration | 1–1.5 hours |
| Price | €16 |
| Audio guide | Included, excellent |
| Photos | Not allowed inside |
| Best time | Earliest morning slot (less crowded) |
| Best for | History lovers, first-time visitors |
Don't go if: Standing in a confined space triggers anxiety. The secret annex is small and can feel claustrophobic.
Rijksmuseum
Why go: The national museum of the Netherlands. 8,000 objects across 80 rooms. The Gallery of Honour features Rembrandt's The Night Watch, Vermeer's The Milkmaid, and masterpieces by Frans Hals and Jan Steen.
Booking: Timed entry required. Book 1–2 weeks ahead for summer, 2–3 days ahead in low season.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Duration | 2–4 hours (most people spend 2.5) |
| Price | €22.50 |
| Audio guide | €5 extra, worth it |
| Best time | 9 AM opening slot |
| Best for | Art lovers, history buffs, anyone |
| Skip if short on time | The 17th-century ship models and dollhouses (fascinating but skippable) |
Strategy for first-timers: Don't try to see everything. Go straight to the Gallery of Honour on the second floor. Spend 30 minutes with The Night Watch. Then wander the other wings based on what interests you. Seeing everything is impossible in one visit.
Van Gogh Museum
Why go: The world's largest collection of Van Gogh's work. Sunflowers, The Bedroom, Almond Blossom, and Self-Portrait are all here. The museum is housed in a striking building designed by Gerrit Rietveld.
Booking: Timed entry required. Book 1–2 weeks ahead.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Duration | 1.5–2 hours |
| Price | €20 |
| Audio guide | Included |
| Best time | 9 AM opening slot |
| Best for | Art lovers, anyone who likes Van Gogh |
| Adjacent to | Rijksmuseum (5 min walk) |
Don't go if: You only have one museum slot. The Rijksmuseum is more comprehensive. Do the Van Gogh if you specifically love his work or want a more focused experience.
Worthwhile Second-Tier Museums

Modern and contemporary art. Mondrian, Malevich, Warhol, De Kooning, Basquiat. The building itself is a split between a 19th-century bathhouse and a futuristic white wing.

- Book: Same week — doesn't sell out as fast
- Location: Museumplein, next to Rijksmuseum

- Book: Same day — walk-in friendly

Best for: History buffs who want to understand Amsterdam beyond the clichés.
A'DAM Lookout
Not a museum — an observation deck with a swing. 360-degree views of Amsterdam from 100 meters up. The swing goes over the edge of the building. Not for acrophobes.

Museum FAQ
Do US student IDs get discounts?
Most Dutch museums accept only the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) , not US university IDs. Check the museum's website.
Are museums open on Mondays?
Many Amsterdam museums are open 7 days a week, including Mondays. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House are all open Monday. Some smaller museums may be closed — check before you go.
Can I bring a backpack into museums?
Small backpacks are usually allowed. Large backpacks (over 55cm) must be checked at the cloakroom. Some museums require all bags to be carried by hand or in front of you.
Is the I amsterdam City Card worth it for museums?
Yes, if you plan to visit 3+ museums in a day. The 24-hour card (€67) pays for itself with Rijksmuseum + Van Gogh + canal cruise + tram. For longer stays, calculate whether the 72-hour or 120-hour card covers enough museums to be worth it.
