National Tulip Day Amsterdam 2027: The Museumplein Pick Garden Guide
Every January, the Dutch floral industry officially kicks off the spring tulip season with National Tulip Day (Nationale Tulpendag). In 2027, this beloved public celebration will take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027.
Dutch tulip growers construct a colossal, vibrant pop-up garden containing over 200,000 blooming tulips in the middle of Amsterdam. The public is invited to step inside the garden and pick a free bouquet of 15 to 20 fresh tulips to take home.
🛑 Critical Mythbuster: National Tulip Day Has Moved!
[!IMPORTANT] LOCATION CORRECTION: Many outdated travel blogs and guidebooks still claim that National Tulip Day takes place on Dam Square.
This is outdated information. Due to crowd expansion and safety requirements, National Tulip Day officially relocated from Dam Square to Museumplein in 2022. The 2027 event will be held on the expansive lawn of Museumplein, framed by the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum.

1. How the Pick Garden Works: Step-by-Step
- Arrive Between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM: Entry officially opens at 13:00, but thousands of locals and tourists queue up early. Arriving before noon ensures you are in the first or second entry wave.
- Receive Your Official Bag: Festival stewards hand each visitor a specially designed biodegradable paper picking bag at the garden entrance gate.
- Pick Your Tulips (With Bulbs Attached): Walk through the vibrant flower beds and choose your favorite colors (reds, yellows, purples, striped botanicals). Gently pull the stem upwards with the bulb attached.
- Caring for Your Bouquet: When you bring them back to your hotel or home, snip the bulbs off with scissors, place the stems in cold water, and your tulips will stay fresh for up to two weeks!
2. Make a Day of It: Museum Quarter & Winter Attractions
National Tulip Day takes place in Amsterdam's grandest cultural hub. Pair the flower picking with nearby winter activities:
- Ice*Amsterdam Skating Rink: Located directly on Museumplein adjacent to the tulip garden. Rent skates (€14.50) and glide across the ice with the majestic Rijksmuseum as your backdrop.
- The Big Three Museums: Warm up inside the Rijksmuseum (Vermeer and Rembrandt masterpieces), the Van Gogh Museum, or the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art (book timed tickets in advance).
- Winter Treats: Grab hot Dutch split pea soup (snert) and warm stroopwafels from the wooden chalets surrounding the square.
