A British Smoker's Guide to Amsterdam
If you're flying in from the UK, you already know that the British make up the largest demographic of Amsterdam's coffeeshop tourists. But the scene has changed drastically over the last few years, especially post-Brexit. Here is everything a UK traveler needs to know to navigate the Dutch cannabis scene like a pro in 2026.
1. The Reality of Schiphol Customs
Since Brexit, UK travelers are subject to full third-country customs checks at Schiphol Airport.
- Do not risk it: The days of casually bringing a gram back on the EasyJet flight are over. Sniffer dogs are common, and the fines are steep.
- The Rule: Smoke it, gift it, or bin it before you head to the airport. Do not attempt to cross the border with any THC products.
2. Dutch Prices vs. UK Street Prices
One of the biggest shocks for UK visitors is the price of cannabis in Amsterdam.
- UK Street Prices: In the UK, a 'Q' (quarter ounce / 7g) of standard haze might cost you £50-£60 (roughly €58-€70). That's about €8-€10 per gram.
- Amsterdam Prices: In the center of Amsterdam, standard Amnesia Haze now averages €13-€16 per gram.
Why is it so much more expensive? You aren't just paying for the weed. You are paying for the massive commercial rent of the coffeeshop, the taxes, the staff wages, and the luxury of sitting in a safe, legal environment.
How to save money: Avoid the tourist traps in the Red Light District. Hop on a tram to De Pijp or Amsterdam Oost, where you can find 5-gram deals that bring the price closer to €9 per gram, much closer to what you're used to back home.
3. Pure Joints Only (The Tobacco Ban)
In the UK, rolling a spliff with tobacco is the standard. In Amsterdam, it is strictly banned indoors.
If you roll a joint with tobacco inside a coffeeshop, you will be asked to put it out immediately. Coffeeshops face massive fines from the government if patrons are caught smoking tobacco on the premises.
The Solution:
- Most coffeeshops provide a bowl of free 'herbal mix' on the tables. It contains no nicotine and burns well.
- Learn to smoke 'pure' (100% cannabis) using smaller rolling papers or a glass pipe.
4. The Famous 'Cali' Strains
You'll see 'Cali Weed' (California imports) on many menus, often priced at an eye-watering €30-€35 per gram.
Before you drop £30 on a single gram to impress your mates back home, understand that Dutch-grown 'Nederwiet' (like Super Silver Haze, White Widow, and local Gelato crosses) is grown to an incredibly high standard and usually costs half the price. Only spring for the Cali tins if you are a true connoisseur looking for a very specific, verified American genetic.
5. ID and Age Limits
You must be 18+ to enter any coffeeshop. Since you need your passport to travel anyway, make sure you carry it (or your UK driving licence) at all times. They will check it at the door, even if you look 30.
Enjoy the trip, respect the bike lanes (seriously, look left and right before crossing), and have a great time!
