Heineken Experience + Jordaan in a Day: Breweries, Bites & Coffeeshops
This is the highest-value single day in Amsterdam for first-timers: a world-class brewery morning in De Pijp, an afternoon eating your way through the Jordaan, and an evening in canalside coffeeshops — all connected by a single tram line and your own feet. No museums, no queues for paintings, no wasted transit hours.
The order matters. Do the brewery sober, eat through the afternoon while the food stalls are open, and save the coffeeshop for the evening when the Jordaan goes quiet and the brown cafés fill up.

1. Morning: Heineken Experience (Book the 10:30 Slot)
The Heineken Experience is the old Heineken brewery on the Stadhouderskade — a 90-minute self-guided tour through the brew rooms, tasting cellars and stables, ending with two beers at the bar. It opens at 10:30 daily (until 19:30 Mon–Thu, 21:00 Fri–Sun) and the first slot of the day is the move: smallest crowds, freshest pours, and you're out by lunchtime with the whole day ahead.
Tactical notes that matter:
- Book timed entry online. Weekends and April–October sell out — walk-ups get turned away at the door. Book Heineken Experience tickets for the 10:30 slot.
- 18+ only, ID required. No exceptions, and they check. Under-18s can't enter at all, so plan around it for mixed groups.
- Standard tour (€24.95) beats Rooftop (€29.95) unless the weather is perfect — the rooftop adds 30–45 minutes for one extra drink and a view you can get free elsewhere.
- Two beers included, pace yourself. You still have a full day. Drink both if you want the full experience, but eat lunch right after.
- I-amsterdam City Card holders get 25% off at the register (€15.75) — but only at the door, not online, so weigh that against the sell-out risk on busy days.
Get there via Metro 52 to De Pijp station (5-minute walk) or tram 4 to Stadhouderskade.
2. Lunch: Albert Cuyp Market (10 Minutes on Foot)
From the brewery it's a short walk into De Pijp's Albert Cuyp Market — Europe's most famous street market and the correct lunch answer. Skip the sit-down restaurants; eat standing up like a local:
- Rudi's Original Stroopwafels: hot-pressed caramel waffles made in front of you. Nothing in a supermarket packet compares.
- Fresh herring with onions from any busy fish stall (a stall with a queue is the entire review system you need).
- A broodje warm vlees or Surinamese bara for something substantial before the afternoon walk.
Eat fast and light — the Jordaan is where the real eating happens.
3. Afternoon: The Jordaan on Foot
Take tram 4 or Metro 52 toward Centraal, then walk west into the Jordaan — the former working-class district turned Amsterdam's prettiest neighborhood. No tickets, no queues, just walk. The loop that works:
[Noordermarkt] ──► Saturday farmers' market + Monday flea market
│
[Hofjes] ──► Hidden almshouse courtyards (Karthuizerhof, Hofje van Brienen)
│
[Saint-Jean] ──► Vegan pistachio cruffins, Lindengracht 99
│
[Nine Streets] ──► Vintage, books, coffee between the canals
│
[Winkel 43] ──► The famous apple pie, Noordermarkt 43
- Hofjes are the secret. These centuries-old charity courtyards hide behind ordinary doors — push gently, step in, whisper. Free, silent, and ten meters from the crowds.
- Winkel 43 at 16:00. The thickest apple pie in the Netherlands under fresh whipped cream. Get your own slice; sharing causes arguments.
- Don't want to navigate? Let a local do it: this Jordaan food tour with 10 tastings covers cheese cellars, a 200-year-old bakery and brown cafés across Spui, the canals and the Jordaan in 3 hours.
4. Evening: Jordaan Coffeeshops & Dinner
By 17:30 the day-trippers leave and the Jordaan exhales. This is coffeeshop prime time:
- Siberie (Brouwersgracht 11): canal-side teas, chessboards and acoustic calm at the northern edge of the Jordaan. Check live menus and prices before you walk over.
- Amnesia (Herengracht 133): velvet couches and a world-class hash menu for a slower, heavier evening.
- Katsu (De Pijp): if you end up back near the market side, warm local vibes and herbal teas.
Eat dinner where the Jordaan eats: brown cafés around Noordermarkt and Westerstraat do hearty Dutch plates until 21:00–22:00. Most kitchens close strictly at 22:00 — full late-night survival tactics in our munchies food guide.
Practical: Trams, Rain & Timing
- One tram does nearly everything. Metro 52 (Noord/Zuidlijn) links Centraal – De Pijp – Vijzelgracht in minutes. Otherwise walk: brewery to market is 10 minutes, market to Jordaan is 20–25.
- Rain backup. Every paid item on this itinerary is indoors (brewery, market stalls have awnings, cafés, coffeeshops). Only the Jordaan walk suffers — pack the €5 poncho and see our rainy-day Amsterdam guide.
- Total walking: ~6 km. Comfortable shoes, not canvas sneakers — Jordaan cobbles punish bad footwear.
Do I need to book the Heineken Experience in advance?
Yes for weekends and April–October, when timed slots sell out. Weekday mornings in winter you can sometimes walk up, but booking the 10:30 slot online costs nothing extra and guarantees entry. Under-18s cannot enter at all.
How long does the Heineken Experience take?
About 90 minutes self-guided plus tasting time — plan 2 hours door to door. Add 30–45 minutes for the rooftop option.
Can you combine the Heineken Experience and the Jordaan in one day?
Easily — that's this entire itinerary. Brewery 10:30–12:30, market lunch, Jordaan afternoon, coffeeshop evening. The two areas are 20 minutes apart by tram, and everything between them is worth walking through.
