Can I Bring My UK Medical Cannabis Prescription to Amsterdam?
Practical travel advice for legal UK patients navigating Schiphol customs and Dutch coffeeshops. Do budtenders care if you have a prescription?

Many of the million-plus UK tourists who visit Amsterdam each year are now legally prescribed medical cannabis back home. But what happens when you cross the border? Can you bring your legal UK medication into the Netherlands, and how do Amsterdam's famous coffeeshops view your prescription?
Here is everything you need to know about traveling to Amsterdam as a UK medical cannabis patient in 2026.
Navigating Schiphol and Customs
First and foremost: You cannot simply pack your cannabis and board a flight to Amsterdam without prior approval.
While cannabis is tolerated in the Netherlands under the gedoogbeleid (toleration policy), it technically remains a controlled substance. To cross international borders with a controlled substance, you must follow the strict rules of the Schengen Agreement.
If you are a UK patient traveling to the Netherlands, you must:
- Obtain a Schengen Certificate or a medical travel letter from your clinic.
- Get it authenticated by the UK government (the FCDO legalization office) before you travel.
- Carry your medication in its original, pharmacy-dispensed packaging with the prescription label clearly visible.
- Carry a physical copy of your latest prescription and a letter from your prescribing specialist.
Failure to declare your medication properly with the right paperwork at Schiphol airport can result in confiscation, fines, or detainment.

Do Coffeeshops Care About Your Prescription?
Once you are safely inside Amsterdam, the rules change from international law to local coffeeshop policy.
Can you smoke your own prescribed cannabis inside a coffeeshop? Generally, no. Coffeeshops are businesses, and their primary rule is that you must purchase something over the counter to use their seating. Walking into a coffeeshop and vaporizing your own UK-dispensed Adven or Khiron flower is viewed exactly the same as bringing your own beer into a pub.
However, many budtenders are highly sympathetic to medical patients. If you purchase a drink or a small amount of product from their menu, they will often allow you to consume your own medication. Always ask politely first.
The Vaporizer Dilemma
UK medical cannabis patients are legally required to consume their flower via a dry herb vaporizer (like a Mighty+ or Volcano). Smoking joints mixed with tobacco is explicitly against UK clinic rules.
In Amsterdam coffeeshops, the culture is heavily skewed toward smoking joints. Fortunately, almost all premium coffeeshops in 2026 have adapted to the medical market. Shops like Amnesia, Barney's, and Dampkring have desktop Volcano vaporizers available for customer use.
Does a Prescription Save You Money in Amsterdam?
If you successfully navigate customs and bring your own medication, yes. The average cost of mid-tier UK medical cannabis is £6.50 - £8.50 per gram. In central Amsterdam, equivalent quality flower can cost €14 - €18 (£12 - £15) per gram due to high tourist demand and taxes.
If you haven't yet secured a UK prescription and are relying on Amsterdam trips for your medical needs, it may be time to switch. Check your eligibility and compare clinics at The Green Prescription to start accessing affordable, legal medicine at home.
