Schiphol Airport Guide for US Arrivals
Dave Mak
Amsterdam Travel Expert

You've landed at Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) — consistently ranked one of the best airports in Europe. From baggage claim to city arrival, your first hour in the Netherlands sets the tone for the trip.
This guide walks you through every step from the gate to your hotel, with specific tips for American travelers arriving from the US.
Before You Land: What to Have Ready
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid 3+ months beyond departure. Emergency passports NOT accepted. |
| ETIAS (when active) | Approved before your flight. Digital or printed copy. |
| Hotel address | Save it in your phone. Border control may ask. |
| Return ticket | Screenshot or open in your phone. May be asked for at passport control. |
| Pen | Fill out any customs forms (rare, but handy). |
Step 1: Deplaning & Walking to Passport Control
Schiphol has one terminal split into three halls (1, 2, 3). US flights typically arrive at Halls 2 or 3. After deplaning:
- Follow signs for "Paspoortcontrole" (Passport Control) / "Arrivals"
- This is a long walk — 5–10 minutes from the gate
- The airport has moving walkways. Use them.
Pro tip: Walk fast. Every minute ahead of the crowd is 10 minutes less in the passport control line.
Step 2: Passport Control
EU vs Non-EU Lines
- EU line: For EU/EEA/Swiss citizens. Do not join this line.
- All Passports line: For everyone else, including US citizens.
What the Officer Asks
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| "Purpose of visit?" | "Tourism" |
| "How long are you staying?" | State the exact number of days |
| "Where are you staying?" | Hotel name and neighborhood |
| "When does your return flight leave?" | Date of your flight home |
Tips for Americans:
- Answer directly. The Dutch appreciate efficiency.
- Have your hotel address and return flight date memorized or accessible
- If asked about funds, you have enough for your stay
- Do not mention cannabis or coffeeshops. It's legal here but don't bring it up at border control.
ETIAS (When Active)
From late 2026, the officer will scan your passport and the ETIAS authorization will be linked automatically. You don't need to present a separate document, though keeping a printed copy is wise.
Step 3: Baggage Claim
After passport control, follow signs for "Baggage" (bagage). The screens above each carousel show your flight number.
| Hall | US Airlines That Typically Arrive Here |
|---|---|
| Hall 1 | Delta (from some cities), JetBlue |
| Hall 2 | Delta, KLM, Virgin Atlantic |
| Hall 3 | KLM, United, American Airlines |
Baggage Claim Tips
- Baggage typically takes 15–25 minutes to arrive
- Look for the "Priority" carousel if you're in business class
- Lost luggage desk is near the exit of each hall — save photos of your luggage before your trip
- Trolleys (carts) are available for €1–€2 (coin or card)
Step 4: Customs
After baggage claim, you walk through the "Nothing to Declare" (green) or "Goods to Declare" (red) channel.
US Travelers: You Are Green Lane
Walk through the green lane unless you have goods exceeding duty-free limits.
| Item | Duty-Free Limit |
|---|---|
| Cigarettes | 200 |
| Alcohol (spirits) | 1 liter (over 22%) |
| Alcohol (wine) | 4 liters (under 22%) |
| Gifts/souvenirs | €430 total value |
Cannabis Warning — Read This
Do not attempt to bring cannabis from Amsterdam back to the US. Despite the tolerant coffeeshop policy in Amsterdam, cannabis is illegal to take out of the Netherlands. Schiphol has sniffer dogs and customs enforcement at departure. The US also considers it illegal to import.
If you purchased cannabis in Amsterdam:
- Consume it before you leave
- Do not pack it in checked or carry-on luggage
- Schiphol pharmacy sells CBD products that are legal to travel with (under 0.2% THC)
Step 5: Getting from Schiphol to the City
This is where most US travelers make their first mistake.
The Best Option: Train
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Cost | €5.50 |
| Duration | 15–20 minutes |
| Frequency | Every 5–10 minutes |
| To | Amsterdam Centraal Station |
| Payment | Tap contactless Visa/Mastercard at the gate. No ticket needed. |
How to find the train:
- Follow signs for "Treinen" (Trains)
- The train station is directly below the airport terminal — escalator down
- Tap your contactless card at the NS gates (look for the card reader)
- Board any train heading to "Amsterdam Centraal"
- Trains run from ~5 AM to midnight
- Tap OUT at Centraal Station
Other Options
| Method | Cost | Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Centraal | €5.50 | 15–20 min | Everyone — this is the default choice |
| NS Sprinter | €5.50 | 20–25 min | Hotels near Sloterdijk, RAI, or Zuid stations |
| Uber | €35–€50 | 25–40 min | Groups of 3+, heavy luggage, late night arrivals |
| Taxi | €50–€65 | 25–40 min | Avoid — expensive and not faster than Uber |
| Airport shuttle bus | €6–€8 | 25–35 min | Slow, limited routes, not recommended |
| Hotel shuttle | Free | Varies | Only if your hotel offers it (rare) |
Why You Should NOT Take a Taxi
- Cost: €50–€65 vs €5.50 for the train
- Time: The train is actually faster (15 min vs 25–40 min in traffic)
- Convenience: The train drops you at Centraal Station, the transport hub
- Pro tip: If you must take a taxi, use Uber. It's cheaper than the taxi rank.
Step 6: From Centraal Station to Your Hotel
If you took the train to Centraal Station:
| Your Hotel Is In... | Best Way |
|---|---|
| Centrum (Center) | Walk (10–20 min) |
| Jordaan | Walk (15–20 min) |
| De Pijp | Tram 16 or 24 |
| Oud-West | Tram 7 or 17 |
| Amsterdam Noord | Free ferry behind Centraal |
| Museumplein | Tram 2 or 5 |
If your hotel is in Centrum or Jordaan, just walk. You'll get your bearings faster than figuring out the tram with luggage.
What to Do in Your First Hour in Amsterdam
- Buy a drink and orient yourself — sit at a cafe near Centraal or your hotel
- Buy a 24-hour tram pass if you're not staying in the center (€10 at a ticket machine or GVB service point)
- Activate your travel insurance — save the emergency number in your phone
- Do not nap — power through until 9 PM to reset your internal clock
- Walk outside — sunlight helps reset your circadian rhythm
- Locate your nearest Albert Heijn supermarket — cheaper than convenience stores for water, snacks, and breakfast

3 hours before departure. US-bound flights have additional security screening at the gate. Schiphol recommends 2 hours for European flights, 3 hours for US/UK/Canada.
Is there a coffeeshop at Schiphol Airport?
No. Schiphol banned coffeeshops years ago. Do not expect to find cannabis at the airport. If you have leftover weed, do NOT attempt to take it through security.
Can I buy weed at the airport?
No. And trying to bring weed through Schiphol security is a bad idea — penalties are severe.
Does Schiphol have luggage storage?
Yes. Baggage storage is available near Arrivals Hall 1 and Hall 2. ~€7–€10 per 24 hours.
What's the WiFi password at Schiphol?
No password needed. Connect to "Schiphol Free WiFi" — it's fast and free with no login required.
